For a few hours now, thick fog has also arrived in the Po Valley, caused by the constant increase in humidity in the lower layers, a completely physiological phenomenon in the presence of a very persistent high-pressure field.
Changes on the horizon
However, we are already on the verge of a new change in weather conditions in Italy and Europe.
Massive cold air masses from the North Pole will soon rush over Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, creating an immense reservoir of icy air that could have repercussions in Italy in the coming weeks. The first disturbance of 2025 will arrive between the evening of Thursday, January 2 and Saturday, January 4.
This fast-moving impulse from the North Atlantic will draw in cold air from Central-Eastern Europe, inevitably leading to a drop in temperatures, first in the North, then also in the Center-South, accompanied by some unstable weather. On Thursday evening and during the day on Friday, we expect scattered rain in the central regions and marginally also in the Triveneto and Liguria. During this period, some snowflakes could reach low mountain or high hill altitudes in the Eastern Alps and the Central-Northern Apennines.
And then?
Between Friday evening and the early hours of Saturday, the disturbance will move very quickly towards the South, bringing some scattered showers here and there, without any significant phenomena.
Meanwhile, weather conditions will improve significantly both in the Center and in the North, with the return of the sun. This could be a temporary improvement, as already around Epiphany, cold flows from the North-West could invade the Mediterranean, bringing clouds and scattered rain to the North and the mid-upper Tyrrhenian.
We will return to this in upcoming weather editorials with clearer and more reliable updates.
