December is becoming a month of authentic Winter for Italy, with weather conditions that finally fully reflect the cold season.
Despite a period of anticyclonic stasis, starting from the 14th, it is possible that the second half of the month could still hold some surprises.
In particular, we refer to the period after Christmas, when a Stratwarming is expected and therefore the possible arrival of a colder period in our country.
Cold End of December
Northern Italy will likely be the main stage for the most extensive snowfalls. Regions such as Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna will see significant snow accumulations, with the possibility of postcard-like winter scenarios.
During the night, temperatures could drop below 23°F, creating intense freezing conditions.
The mountains in the North, including the Alps and the northern Apennines, will record even more substantial snow accumulations. In some Alpine locations, snow depths are expected to exceed 20 inches, making December a perfect period for winter sports enthusiasts.
Even the hills and valleys of the North will be involved, with moderate snowfalls contributing to a typically Christmas atmosphere.
The Center-South and Snow at Altitude
Even Central and Southern Italy, usually less prone to extreme winter conditions, could experience significant snow episodes. In Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia, snow is expected mainly above 2300-3300 feet. However, mountain locations like Potenza and the heights of Pollino could see accumulations exceeding 20 inches.
But These Are Only Trends, Not Certainties!
Despite current trends pointing to a December characterized by intense cold and widespread snowfalls, the weather picture could change.
Some models indicate the possibility that milder winds from the Atlantic could mitigate the effects of the cold, reducing snowfalls and bringing temperatures back to the seasonal average.
This scenario could have significant repercussions on national water reserves, winter tourism activities, and the daily life of areas most exposed to bad weather.
The end of December could therefore become the symbol of a Winter, bringing abundant snowfalls and cold temperatures that will deeply mark the Italian climate.
So the weather break is only temporary…
