However, this month has shown signs of a more real Winter, partially breaking the monotony we were used to. The possibility of a different seasonal trend therefore seems to be materializing, although the peak moment could still manifest.
January Changes
The forecasts for January suggest a significant change, with prospects of severe weather events that could appear in the second part of the first decade and in the central phase of the month.
For now, these are trends, but the main weather centers are beginning to identify scenarios compatible with a great cold. After the first days of January, Italy will initially be on the margins of cold events.
Epiphany will mark a descent of Arctic air, which will mainly affect Central and Eastern Europe.
This movement will be guided by a cold depression located over Scandinavia. A disturbed front, related to this cold wave, will move towards our territory, bringing scattered rains.
However, this disturbance will not be able to drag icy air over Italy, as there will be a lack of significant cyclogenesis over the Italian seas capable of attracting the cold from northern latitudes.
The frontal system will quickly slide towards the Balkans, leaving our country under the influence of the Anticyclone, which will be more persistent than expected.
Epiphany: A Possible Change
During the Epiphany weekend, an Atlantic depression will try to make its way by contrasting the cold air present in the heart of Europe.
The milder western currents will favor an anticyclonic rise over the Central-Western Mediterranean and Italy.
Consequently, the climate will be generally mild and humid, not cold and snowy as previously hypothesized. Italy will therefore be influenced by an unstable balance between the low-latitude Anticyclone and the oceanic flow, moving from the United Kingdom towards Scandinavia.
The evolution for the following week appears uncertain, with the possibility that intense cold will manifest around January 10, although the models suggest various scenarios. One of the possible scenarios foresees a strengthening of the Anticyclone between January 8 and 10, but there is also the hypothesis of a descent of a cold trough over Italy. If this latter situation occurs, a marked cooling could be established, accompanied by snowfalls down to the plains in Northern Italy, thanks to the development of a Mediterranean depression.
Here’s When Intense Cold Will Hit Italy
After Epiphany, the real winter turning point could come between the second week and mid-January.
Europe will be under the influence of Arctic currents, and part of these cold air masses could also pour over Italy, especially in the northern and central regions.
This will happen following the progressive weakening of the Anticyclone that currently dominates the scene. Temperatures, so far above the seasonal average, could drop drastically.
According to some models, the entry of cold air could bring snowy phenomena not only to the Alps and the Apennines but also to the plains of Northern Italy.
It is likely that Sardinia and Sicily will remain less exposed to these dynamics, maintaining a milder climate. The forecasts indicate a progressive cooling between January 10 and 15, with the arrival of a possible Mediterranean depression.
This atmospheric configuration could give rise to snowfalls down to low altitudes, especially in the northern regions and along the Apennine ridge.
Towards a More Dynamic Winter: What to Expect
The coming days will be crucial to confirm the hypotheses of a more incisive Winter over Italy.
For now, the Anticyclone will continue to influence the weather, maintaining predominantly mild and stable conditions.
However, signs of change are already emerging on the European scene. The weather situation could evolve rapidly, with the risk of cold waves coming from the North Pole.
The weather conditions will probably be more dynamic compared to recent Winters, characterized by anticyclonic stability and scarce precipitation.
A Scary Second Decade
Attention is focused on the second decade of January, which could represent the real start of the winter season in terms of intense cold and snowfalls.
The extent of any cold incursions and the impact they will have on the different Italian regions remains to be assessed. In any case, the weather in January seems to promise more variety compared to what has been observed in recent years. The arrival of the real Winter is only a matter of time, with the possibility that cold and snow will become protagonists in the weather of the coming weeks.
