WEATHER UNTIL JANUARY 4, 2025, ANALYSIS AND FORECAST
All of Italy is now in the grip of an Anticyclone that dominates the weather across much of Europe. Atlantic disturbances are forced to pass at high latitudes, barely grazing the British Isles before moving towards Scandinavia.
The atmosphere is becoming increasingly stagnant over Italy, although cold air persists in the lower layers with nighttime frost thanks to radiation. The temperature rise will be felt especially in the highlands. The anticyclone will ensure almost unchallenged good weather scenarios across the entire country and no substantial changes are expected until New Year’s Eve.
The heart of the Anticyclone is expected to position itself right over Italy, although increasing cloudy disturbances will not be lacking due to humid infiltrations conveyed by a weak Afro-Mediterranean depression. The progressive accumulation of humidity in the lower layers will lead to a significant increase in fog in valleys and plains, as well as increasingly compact low clouds between Liguria and the Upper Tyrrhenian where some isolated light rain is possible by New Year’s Eve.
These will be clear signs of the aging of the high pressure, which will be followed by a true and proper decline. The more marked weakening of the anticyclone could occur around January 3-4 and thus pave the way for the return of North Atlantic fronts.
This change in circulation should lead us towards a deterioration that should be felt in the first weekend of 2025, with the probable influx of colder air of polar origin following.
Winter will return to be the protagonist in Central-Northern Europe.
IN DETAIL
Sunday 29: generally sunny with wide clear skies even in the South, except for residual clouds in some Ionian areas between Salento, Calabria, and Eastern Sicily. First low clouds in Liguria and Tuscany, but of little significance.
Fog banks and mist in valleys and plains. Monday 30: unchanged with prevailing sun due to the further strengthening of the anticyclone.
More fog in valleys and the Po Valley.
Increasing low clouds on the Ligurian coasts. New Year’s Eve: more hazy and gloomy on the northern plains and Tyrrhenian areas, but without phenomena. Further weather trends: even compact clouds in Liguria and Tyrrhenian areas, with isolated weak phenomena starting from the beginning of the year.
More significant deterioration and temperature drop from the weekend, due to the arrival of a first North Atlantic front.
