After a period characterized by rainy phases, the arrival of subtropical anticyclones from North Africa brought a significant upheaval of seasonal averages.
Projections for the beginning of Winter
The forecasts for the coming weeks do not promise a return to typical winter weather conditions.
The strengthening of the Polar Vortex, a phenomenon that keeps cold air masses confined to high latitudes, could prevent the arrival of cold waves in Central Europe and, consequently, in Italy.
This situation increases the risk of a Winter dominated by high pressure and the lack of significant events, such as widespread snowfalls and rains. If this scenario were to be confirmed, our country could face a “dull” winter, devoid of those weather phenomena necessary to rebalance water resources.
The regions of Northern Italy, for example, risk seeing an increase in problems related to drought, a phenomenon that has already caused difficulties in various economic sectors, particularly agriculture, during the current year.
The effects of a static winter
A winter dominated by high pressure not only results in above-normal temperatures but can also amplify problems such as air pollution.
The persistence of stable weather conditions, in fact, favors the accumulation of fine particles in the large cities of the North, making the air more difficult to breathe and increasing health risks. Moreover, the lack of significant snowfalls in the mountains could have direct repercussions on spring water reserves. Alps and Apennines, without adequate snow accumulation, would not be able to provide sufficient water for rivers during the hot months.
This scenario worries not only the regions of Northern Italy but also those of the Center and South, which often depend on northern water basins.
December and the hope for a change of course
Despite the current outlook not seeming favorable for a return of the cold, December could offer some surprises.
Long-term weather forecasts suggest the possibility of Arctic air incursions, which could lead to a drop in temperatures and a resumption of precipitations.
However, at the moment, the probability of a significant change remains uncertain. A dynamic Winter, characterized by a uniform distribution of rains and snowfalls, would be essential to counteract the effects of global warming.
The hope is that in the coming weeks, atmospheric events will occur that can restore balance, preventing the Bel Paese from remaining “dry”.
