All of Europe is under the dominance of the anticyclone, with stable weather and an anomalous absence of disturbances.
Italy is certainly no exception. This scenario will not last long and confirmations are coming for a sudden change next week, when we will have a first typically winter cold snap. There will indeed be a European-level upheaval with the anticyclone migrating further north and west, placing its maximum between the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.
A very cold air impulse will plunge towards the heart of Europe and then could partly spread to Italy as well. The impact of this cold air towards the Mediterranean will cause the formation of a cyclone, from which instability or bad weather over much of our regions should arise.
Thus, we expect the return of rains, but the novelty will also be the arrival of the first snow down to locally low altitudes. Before this sudden winter plunge, we still expect days of anticyclone and relative monotony, although we are beginning to observe the first disturbances related to the weakening of the anticyclone over the Lower Mediterranean.
Instability is thus returning, which in recent days was confined to Spain.
Bad weather returns, but Winter is also coming
The first precipitations have already affected Sicily and in the coming days will also appear in Sardinia and locally other parts of the extreme South.
Over the weekend, these contrasts could slightly intensify over parts of the South due to the influx of slightly colder air from the Balkans. This will be just the preview of what awaits us next week, when the change will indeed materialize in a winter key.
We risk suddenly transitioning from Autumn to Winter, with Italy exposed to a cold descent coming from the Baltic-Scandinavian area. If this evolution is confirmed, we should not be surprised.
The first winter cold would certainly not be an anomaly in November, although in recent years there have been no noteworthy winter events in this month.
The latest projections indicate a decisively winter scenario from November 11-12. The cold air mass that could spill over Italy from the Adriatic, favoring the deepening of a cyclonic vortex over the Italian seas. The bad weather could be significant, also due to the contrasts with the still warm sea.
The first snow below 1000 meters could arrive in the Alps and the Northern Apennines.
