Extreme November: record-breaking weather phenomena increasingly frequent

In recent years, November has been a month particularly marked by extreme weather events in Italy, with phenomena such as floods, tornadoes, and strong winds intensifying in various areas of the country.

Climate change, characterized by rising average temperatures and irregular precipitation, has indeed created the ideal conditions for a greater frequency and intensity of these events.

This Italian autumn scenario, traditionally characterized by mild weather and moderate rains, has undergone radical changes, especially in the northern and southern regions, and along the Tyrrhenian coasts.   One of the main characteristics of November’s extreme events is their intensity and the rapid accumulation of rain, leading to frequent flooding.

Northern Italy is often among the most affected areas, with regions such as Liguria, Piedmont, and Veneto experiencing torrential rains that cause river overflows and landslides, with significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and crops.

This pattern has been repeating almost every year, with precipitation that, in very short periods, exceeds the seasonal average levels.

The intense rains thus lead to an overload of urban drainage infrastructure, causing floods that challenge local administrations and require significant repair and remediation efforts.   In Southern Italy, the month of November has brought the appearance of extreme weather phenomena related to strong winds and storm surges, which hit coastal areas and create dangers for resident communities.

Sicily is an example of a region highly vulnerable to these phenomena, where so-called medicanes (Mediterranean cyclones) have struck multiple times in recent years.

In November 2021, such a cyclone, known as Apollo, hit the island with winds reaching 100 km/h, accompanied by intense precipitation that caused flooding along the coasts.

The effects of these storms are not limited to material damage: they often lead to the interruption of local economic activities, especially in the agricultural and tourism sectors, significantly impacting the island’s economy.   Tornado phenomena are also increasing during the month of November, especially in areas such as the Salento coast and northern Tuscany.

These increasingly frequent events hit the coasts and urban areas with greater intensity, causing large-scale destruction.

Tornadoes, a relatively rare phenomenon in the past, now represent a concrete and growing threat that could further intensify in the future.

Atmospheric instability and rising sea temperatures make these phenomena a constant presence in autumn weather forecasts, which were once almost exclusively dedicated to seasonal rains.   Another characteristic of Italian November weather is the strong variability of precipitation, linked to the alternation of drought periods and brief moments of extreme weather.

Island regions such as Sardinia and Sicily are particularly exposed to this dynamic, with drought periods compromising water reserves, alternated with phases of violent rains that overload the soil, leading to a high risk of hydrogeological instability.

These extreme events put pressure on the already fragile water balance of these islands, creating devastating impacts on agriculture and increasing the vulnerability of inhabited centers.   The increase in extreme weather events in November is one of the most evident signs of ongoing climate change and raises the urgency for adaptation strategies and interventions.

It has become essential to think of a national prevention plan that can prepare the country to face future risks.

Various proposals include the adoption of sustainable building regulations, the promotion of renewable energies, and the creation of green infrastructures that can help better manage stormwater, reducing the risk of flooding in urban areas.

Strengthening coastal barriers and improving drainage networks are also actions that could protect the most exposed and vulnerable areas.   This framework highlights how climate change is directly influencing Italian weather conditions, making November a complex and dangerous month from a climatic point of view.

In the face of the increasing intensity and frequency of such extreme events, Italy needs a structural approach that not only mitigates immediate damage but also ensures the long-term safety of its communities and territory.
