Weather, Unpredictable Autumn: Cyclones and Extreme Cold Risk Disrupting Italy

The month of September 2024 represented a significant turning point for the Italian climate, highlighting a radical change compared to the weather patterns of recent years.     While in the past summer seemed to extend without interruption, thanks to the persistent influence of the African Anticyclone and high temperatures delaying the arrival of autumn, this year the situation was different.     Even though summer temperatures characterized some days, especially in the South and the Major Islands, the overall trend was much less predictable and deviated from more recent trends.     This change is also reflected in the forecasts for the month of October, which is expected to be more unstable than September.

The weather conditions expected for October suggest a very disturbed context, with a clear departure from the prolonged summers we were used to.   Although the anticyclone may reappear, the lack of favorable conditions seems to prevent its lasting stabilization. This is a trend reversal that fits into a broader context of seasonal evolution, characterized by significant changes and potential extremes.     Autumn 2024 indeed seems to deviate from traditional models, outlining unusual and potentially more extreme weather scenarios.

After a complicated October, November could also present further challenges, not only with the persistence of atmospheric instability, but also with a possible early arrival of cold weather.

The development of Mediterranean cyclones, the so-called “Medicanes“, which could further aggravate the conditions of the month, is not excluded.     Another critical aspect concerns the situation of the Polar Vortex, which appears unstable and weakened.

This condition could trigger an anomalous cold wave in Italy as early as November, with possible low-altitude snowfalls.

Although not unprecedented, such events are rare, and this year’s potential impact could surpass previous cold outbreaks in terms of intensity and snow accumulation.     As winter approaches, this unusual climate trend could consolidate.

While long-term seasonal projections often suggest a return to drought conditions and high temperatures, the current trend suggests that the winter of 2024-2025 could surprise, characterized by being colder and more dynamic than usual.     autumn 2024 is rewriting expectations for the Italian climate, showing variability and unpredictability in contrast to recent years. The possibility of Mediterranean cyclones, the uncertainty related to the Polar Vortex, and the potential for early cold indicate a period of significant change.

It remains essential to constantly monitor atmospheric evolution to adequately respond to extreme events that may occur in the coming months.
