Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, with sudden shifts from high temperatures to cold waves, and from prolonged droughts to torrential rains. According to the GFS weather model, next week could see Sicily and Calabria dealing with an extreme phenomenon: a North African cyclone, expected to move from west to east, threatens to bring significant precipitation to the two regions. The cyclone is expected to start affecting the western provinces of Sicily, with Trapani and Palermo among the first to face bad weather, between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, the 9th.
Models predict an expansion of the phenomenon towards Agrigento during the same day. From the second half of Wednesday until Thursday the 10th, the southeastern areas of Sicily, including Ragusa, Siracusa, and Catania, will be the most affected by thunderstorms, before the system moves towards the Ionian Sea and also reaches southern Calabria, with particular attention to the Reggio area. Current weather projections indicate significant rainfall accumulations for several areas.
Trapani and Palermo could receive between 50 and 70 mm of precipitation, an amount sufficient to cause disruptions, especially in urban areas vulnerable to flooding. The situation seems more critical for the provinces of Ragusa, Siracusa, and the Reggio area, where accumulations of over 100 mm are expected.
Such amounts of rain could easily cause emergency situations, with local floods and landslides, especially in areas already at hydrogeological risk. Catania and Messina will not be exempt from bad weather either: these cities are expected to receive accumulations between 70 and 80 mm.
The intensity of the precipitation could lead to urban flooding, making circulation difficult and requiring careful management by local authorities. As the expectation of significant rains grows, especially after periods of drought, it is equally important to avoid the risk of transitioning from a water crisis to a flood emergency.
Staying informed through official channels will be essential to face this possible weather event with awareness and preparation.
