Starting from the middle of the week, the Anticyclone will extend from North Africa to the northernmost areas of Europe, ensuring prolonged atmospheric stability that will block the entry of new disturbances.
This phenomenon, typical of late autumn, will mark a stop to the more unstable autumn conditions, offering predominantly dry and mild days, although not guaranteeing clear skies everywhere.
Fog and low clouds: the challenge of high pressure
Contrary to what one might think, the presence of high pressure in autumn does not automatically translate into clear skies and bright sunshine.
In reality, this configuration tends to favor the formation of fog and low clouds, especially in the plains and internal valleys of North and Central Italy. The northern plains, such as the Po Valley, will be particularly subject to the formation of extensive fog banks that, on many days, appear during the cooler hours of the morning and evening.
Fog, in fact, can persist throughout the day, especially in the absence of winds or disturbances that facilitate its dispersion, creating a gloomy and gray atmosphere. The phenomenon of autumn fog represents one of the most common manifestations of atmospheric stability due to the anticyclone at this time of year, limiting visibility and slowing down road traffic in the early hours of the day. Central Italy will also be affected by this phenomenon, although with less intensity than North Italy.
Mild climate in the South and above-average temperatures
The influence of the African Anticyclone will help keep temperatures at relatively high values for the season, especially in the southern regions and along the coastal areas. Southern Italy and the Main Islands, such as Sicily and Calabria, will see daytime temperatures that can reach 25°C, values decidedly above the seasonal average.
Here, the presence of the sun will accentuate the feeling of mild weather, creating ideal conditions for outdoor days, while in the coastal areas the climate will be moderated by the proximity of the sea.
In North Italy, however, daytime values will remain more contained, especially in areas subject to persistent fog.
This effect will be felt less along the coastal areas and in the regions of the Center, where the presence of the sun will maintain a mild climate, although it will not reach the peaks typical of the southern regions.
Night cold and marked thermal excursions
The effect of the anticyclone will lead to significant thermal excursions in the internal and flat areas, especially in the Po Valley.
The lack of cloud cover during the night hours favors a cooling of the air, leading to lower minimum temperatures compared to the day.
Early in the morning, thermal values can approach 5°C, creating a notable contrast with the mild afternoon temperatures.
This situation will characterize the entire period of atmospheric stability guaranteed by the high pressure, with cool mornings followed by relatively mild afternoons, highlighting the autumn transition towards winter.
Atmospheric stability and future scenarios
Italy will therefore experience a period of calm weather, with mostly clear skies and no precipitation in Southern Italy, while in the plains of North Italy fog will become a constant presence, especially in the morning and evening hours.
This atmospheric stability, while it removes the threat of disturbances and bad weather, creates the ideal conditions for a sort of “Mild Autumn,” delaying the expectations of a rapid approach to winter cold.
The anticyclone, ensuring dry and stable days, slows the arrival of cold phases that usually begin to appear in the month of November.
This autumn stop, however, represents a typical anomaly of European weather, increasingly subject to extreme phenomena and sudden climate changes.
