What will we remember about the weather in September?

September is coming to an end, in a few days we will be able to focus exclusively on the climatic evolution of October – which we have already been dealing with for some time – but before that happens, we absolutely need to update what until last week we had defined as a “provisional balance”.

A balance that, at this point and considering what awaits us from here to next Monday (September 30), has dispelled any doubts (if there were any). We can certainly say that we have experienced an old-fashioned month, therefore fully autumnal, albeit with all the differences of the case.

Differences mean that we cannot generalize, we know the regional microclimates, however, we can safely say that it was a rainy month and for long stretches cool.

Indeed, after the heat of the first days, we even had cold weather.

Of course, the thermal balance is not at all obvious, in the sense that the Arctic incursion did bring a period of temperatures below seasonal averages, but even in a certainly unusual context, there were still days marked by summer.

After all, we could not expect anything different, hoping for an exclusively Arctic month was not possible and would not have been normal at all.

One could discuss the nature of the various deteriorations, the fact that they were not the classic Atlantic disturbances, but what matters is the result.

A result that, let’s say it, speaks clearly: rains that were too heavy, locally flooding.

Often in the form of thunderstorms or even worse, cloudbursts, which obviously brought back the age-old problems of the hydrogeological fragility of our country.

For heaven’s sake, in some areas of Italy it rained very little and it is right to say so, but overall the rainfall regime was still autumnal.

One could go into even more detail, but at that point, it would be necessary to write an in-depth analysis for each individual region of Italy.

Indeed, for each individual area of the boot, including the Major Islands.

The aforementioned microclimatic differences evidently play an essential role in ensuring that the monthly climatic balance is not the same for everyone.

But we know, when we are dealing with deteriorations caused by insidious cold drops, or secondary depressions as they are called, we certainly cannot expect an equitable distribution of precipitation.

The fact is that yes, September was surprisingly autumnal and there is no doubt about it.

Anyone who still has any doubts is invited to think back to previous Septembers, when summer was in full swing, dispensing heat left and right.
