Weather in the coming days, High Pressure begins to collapse. The calm before the March Storms

The weather forecast for Italy in the coming days, specifically for Monday, March 18, 2024, and the following four days, anticipates variable atmospheric conditions across the entire country.

On Monday, the North is expected to have a very cloudy sky in the morning with light scattered precipitation and snowfall on the Alpine peaks bordering at elevations starting from 2000 meters. During the afternoon, more frequent rainfall is expected, especially in Veneto and Romagna, while the western regions and the west of Lombardy will experience significant clearing. From the evening, a further improvement in weather conditions is expected across the entire northern area, except for residual light phenomena on the high-altitude areas of Alto Adige and southern Romagna. Dense fogs and mists are also forecast during the coldest hours on the central-eastern Po plain and along the northern Adriatic coasts.

In the Center and Sardinia, the sky will be very cloudy or overcast with scattered rains, which may take on the character of a downpour in the Apennine areas and other regions along the Adriatic. From the evening, precipitation will diminish in central-western Tuscany and upper Lazio, with possible clearings. Regarding Sardinia, after a start with an opaque sky due to thick veils, widespread clearing is forecast in the afternoon and evening.

In the South and Sicily, cloudiness will be extensive, becoming denser on the Molise, Campania, and Tyrrhenian areas of Basilicata and Calabria reliefs, with associated weak rains and some isolated showers. These phenomena will extend in the afternoon to the rest of Molise and Lucania territories, as well as to Puglia. In the evening, a further worsening with more widespread phenomena is expected on the Adriatic regions and near the Apennine areas, while wide clearings will affect central-southern Calabria and Sicily.

Regarding temperatures, a decrease in minimum temperatures is forecast in southern Puglia, Ionian Basilicata, and central-eastern Sicily. No significant changes are expected in central-southern Calabria, while minimum temperatures will rise in the rest of the country. Maximum temperatures are expected to increase in Sardinia, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, and the northern and eastern areas of Sicily. They will remain steady in Valle d’Aosta, Piedmont, northern Veneto, along the Marche, Lazio, and Abruzzo coasts, in eastern Molise, and on the Campanian Apennine, while a decrease is forecast in the rest of Italy.

Winds will be light and variable, tending to arrange themselves from the western quadrants on the major islands and the southern Tyrrhenian regions. As for the seas, the lower Ionian will be rough; the lower Tyrrhenian, the Strait of Sicily, and the northern Ionian will vary from rough to slightly rough; while the remaining basins will generally be slightly rough with a gradually increasing wave motion in the Ligurian Sea and the central-northern Tyrrhenian.

In the following days, Tuesday, March 19, residual rains are forecast on Abruzzo and the southern peninsula, diminishing from the afternoon, and widespread cloudiness on the Triveneto reliefs. The rest of Italy will enjoy stable and sunny weather, although widespread fog formations are expected during the coldest hours on the central-eastern Po plain and along the northern Adriatic coasts. On Wednesday, March 20, many clouds will cover the northwest and the remaining Alpine and Prealpine areas, as well as the Emilia-Romagna Apennines, with possible light rains in the Piedmont foothills and some isolated showers near the other northern reliefs. Cloudy conditions with a risk of local weak precipitation are also forecast on the central Apennines and between Sicily and lower Calabria; the sky will be clear and then veiled for the rest of the country, but with the arrival of more consistent clouds over Sardinia by the end of the day.

For Thursday, March 21, and Friday, March 22, residual light phenomena are forecast on the Piedmont foothills, and there is a risk of extensive coverage over the rest of the Alpine and Prealpine chain, but also over Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, and the central regions including Sardinia, with possible light rains and some isolated showers on the island and sporadic showers in the central peninsula. The rest of Italy will be covered by broad but harmless veils. On Friday, the weather will be variable with an initial risk of some phenomena in Lazio, Umbria, and the central-southern Adriatic regions, and the possibility of greater clearings in the second part of the day, especially on the major islands and the central-southern regions.
