As we approach the second half of January, curiosity among enthusiasts and readers about future prospects is growing.
Will it be a winter full of twists or will we witness a flatter phase dominated by the Anticyclone?
The Anticyclone: presence not guaranteed
A strong Polar Vortex is often associated with the predominance of the Anticyclone over Europe, with stable weather conditions and mild temperatures.
In recent years, this trend has been evident, leading to milder winters compared to the past.
However, for the current winter, the scenario appears less predictable.
The presence of La Niña, a climatic phenomenon that influences global climate, and other anomalous atmospheric patterns are creating conditions favorable to more dynamic evolutions.
One of the possible scenarios is the return of a significant freeze, a rare event but one that, in the current context, cannot be ruled out.
Exceptional freeze: rare but not impossible hypothesis
Between January and February 2025, an exceptionally intense freeze could occur, similar to those recorded every 15-20 years.
To find an event of this magnitude, one must go back to February 2012, a month that left its mark due to intense snowfalls and biting cold that affected almost all of Italy.
The Polar Vortex, although currently stable, could undergo significant disturbances, such as the phenomenon of sudden stratospheric warming.
This type of event can destabilize the vortex, leading to the displacement of cold air masses towards lower latitudes.
Stratospheric warming and winter scenarios
The sudden stratospheric warming can lead to two main developments.
In the case of a displacement of the vortex, the cold air moves towards other geographical areas, without directly affecting Italy.
However, if a breakdown of the polar vortex, known as a “split,” occurs, the chances of a significant freeze increase considerably.
In this second case, cold air masses could invade Northern Italy and some areas of Central Italy, bringing cold temperatures and abundant snowfalls even in the plains.
Nevertheless, a breakdown of the vortex does not automatically guarantee freezing conditions in our country, but it increases the probability of more extreme winter scenarios.
Weather January 2025: awaiting the crossroads
With the seasonal peak of cold approaching, January presents itself as a crucial month to determine the fate of winter.
The evolutions of the Polar Vortex will be decisive in understanding whether we will witness anticyclonic stability or if the cold will make its return.
It is likely that the month will be characterized by a variable trend, with alternation between periods of stability linked to the Anticyclone and phases of more marked cold, which will mainly affect Northern Italy and the Apennine areas.
However, the possibility of a significant disturbance to the polar vortex remains alive, a factor that could radically change the meteorological picture.
The second half of winter therefore seems to be a meteorological crossroads, where atmospheric signals have yet to clearly outline the definitive direction.
