These particularly stable weather conditions, however, will not last long, as the polar vortex will tend to deteriorate again during the first ten days of the month.
The first disturbance of 2025
The very first disturbance of 2025 is confirmed between January 3 and 4, but it will be a quick impulse of North Atlantic origin, bringing some rain, especially to the central-southern regions.
The arrival of this quick disturbance will pave the way for subsequent deteriorations, due to waves of Arctic cold, which could invade all of central Europe and the Mediterranean right after Epiphany.
The baric chessboard of the northern hemisphere will undergo a profound structural change in a few days: the polar vortex, which is currently quite compact, will be literally demolished by the triple action of the main high pressures of our hemisphere.
Among all, it will be the Azores high pressure that will dominate the North Atlantic, even reaching the North Pole, literally cutting the polar vortex in two.
This action, carried out by the Azores anticyclone, could favor the detachment of an immense core of cold air from the North Pole, which would easily rush over eastern Europe and Scandinavia.
Cold in Eastern Europe and coming to Italy?
The arrival of cold in Eastern Europe seems already confirmed in this first week of January, but its arrival in Italy will depend mainly on the stability of the base of the Azores anticyclone.
If the anticyclone shows a worthy hold at its root, we could encounter the first wave of cold of the new year right after Epiphany.
The arrival of the great cold from the northeast could bring snowfalls at very low altitudes, in the plains, in the Adriatic and central regions, without excluding an initial involvement of Northern Italy, which could turn white even in the plains. In short, it seems that January will not stand by as it has in recent years; on the contrary, it could bring us a series of strong waves of bad weather, with cold, rain, and snowfalls, between the first and second ten days of the month.
