A mass of icy air of Arctic origin is about to reach Italy, promising abundant snowfall in many areas of Central-Southern Italy.
Arctic currents and a snow-laden cyclone
The descent of cold air from the Balkans, associated with the formation of a cyclone in the Mediterranean, will be responsible for a significant weather deterioration.
The peak of this Arctic wave is expected between today December 23 and Christmas (December 25), with heavy snowfall in all mountainous areas of the Central-South.
Abundant snowfall in the central Apennines
Regions such as Marche, Abruzzo, and Molise will be the most affected, with accumulations that could exceed 3.3 feet of snow above 3280 feet.
Significant snowfall will also affect lower altitudes, starting from 984-1312 feet, creating snowy landscapes in many hilly locations.
Southern Apennines and snow in Sicily
The Southern Apennines will also see abundant snowfall. Between Basilicata and high Calabria, the mountainous areas of Pollino and Eastern Sila could receive accumulations between 15.7 and 23.6 inches, making these areas perfect for an authentic white Christmas. Northern Sicily will not be left out: between the eastern Palermo area and Messina, above 3280 feet, snow accumulations could reach and exceed 3.3 feet by Boxing Day.
A rare event, which will create picturesque landscapes in locations such as the Madonie and Nebrodi mountains.
North wind and widespread frost
The strong north wind will be a distinctive element of this weather phase. With gusts exceeding 37 mph, it will make the perceived temperatures even lower throughout Central-Southern Italy.
Frost will also affect coastal cities, while in mountainous areas, conditions will be ideal for significant snow accumulations.
An authentically wintery Christmas
The weather conditions for this Christmas 2024 will be unforgettable for many Italian regions.
After years of temperatures up to 68°F during the holidays, this year the cold and snow will dominate the landscape, especially in mountainous and hilly areas.
This unique scenario will make Christmas an authentic and magical experience for winter lovers.
