The weather forecast for the weekend’s bad weather is not simple, as it involves a vortex whose position is not yet precisely defined.
We are approaching the event, and mathematical models are becoming more accurate thanks to more recent and reliable data. An important development concerns the intensification of the cold depression vortex, positioned at higher latitudes.
This results in a more marked involvement of Northern Italy, where the bad weather could be more intense.
Current data indicate significant depression activity over the central-northern Mediterranean, with a baric minimum expected for Sunday, December 8, between Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and the lower northern plains. The vortex, located slightly further north than previous projections, results in a more limited influx of cold air over Italy.
The trajectory of the minimum will favor the confluence of cold air towards France, Spain, and the western Mediterranean, reducing the direct impact on our country.
Consequently, the winter wave will be less severe, but the weather conditions will remain widely disturbed, with a strong involvement of the northern regions. Precipitation, which seemed concentrated on the Alps and Northeast, will extend over much of Northern Italy.
Snow is expected at mid-mountain altitudes, from 2950/3280 feet in the central Apennines, while in the South it could fall above 3937/4593 feet.
However, some locations in Northern Italy could see snowfall at low altitudes, especially in the foothill areas of Emilia-Romagna and the valleys of the northwestern Apennines, up to the outskirts of Reggio Emilia, Modena, Parma, and Bologna.
Here, 12-16 inches of snow could accumulate above 1968/2297 feet, with smaller accumulations even at 328-656 feet. In the rest of the northern Apennines, between Pavese, Alessandrino, the inland areas of Genoa, and Tuscan sectors, snow will be more abundant above 2625/3280 feet, rising to 3937/4265 feet towards the east.
The Northeast could experience more severe bad weather, with rainfall accumulations between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia up to 3.5 inches in 24 hours, with possible critical issues. In the Alps and northeastern Prealps, significant snow accumulations are expected: up to 31-35 inches above 2950/3280 feet, especially in the Dolomites and Venetian Prealps.
Snowfalls will also be present in the western Alps, locally down to 1640/1968 feet, particularly in the Garda area.
The day of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, is confirmed to be the most disturbed, with widespread severe weather conditions.
