This first part of winter 2024/25 is showing itself to be particularly active, thanks to the alternation of disturbed impulses that have already brought significant phenomena to many Italian regions.
It is a weather picture that deserves to be followed closely, especially for those who love observing winter dynamics. The month is now preparing to enter a colder phase with the arrival of Arctic air currents.
Starting from the Immaculate Conception, in fact, the incursion of polar air masses could lead to a general drop in temperatures, also favoring quick snowfalls at low altitudes in the North.
This configuration is also favorable for new snowfalls along the Apennine mountains, which will add to the snow cover already present in many mountain locations.
Although no particularly striking cold waves are expected, the climate is responding to the winter standards of December, and this is an important signal considering the trends of past years, often characterized by long periods dominated by high pressure. The second decade of the month could instead mark a change.
Between December 13 and 14, current projections indicate the arrival of milder currents, which will raise temperatures in many areas.
However, no particularly significant anomalies are expected: the thermal context should remain fairly balanced, without excessive heat.
This transition to relatively milder conditions will not mean lasting stability: it is likely that the Atlantic flow will continue to influence the weather picture, with new unstable impulses alternating with drier pauses.
A December approaching “winter normality”
Winter 2024 is offering a scenario that, while not extreme, is already significant in itself.
The absence of long dry or warm periods represents an improvement compared to recent decades, when December was often dominated by persistent anticyclones.
The presence of snow on much of the Alpine and Apennine arc is an excellent signal, not only for mountain enthusiasts but also for future water resources. Moving towards Christmas, it is expected that this atmospheric dynamism will continue to prevail, confirming a winter that, although without excesses, is proving to be noteworthy.
A season that, at least up to this point, fully meets the expectations of those hoping for a lively December closer to the typical winter standards.
