The interaction between these cold currents and the atmosphere of our country will lead to a significant worsening of the climate starting from Friday, December 20. The winds, which will blow with storm intensity in several areas, will be the main culprits of the wind cooling effect, as they will help dissipate the layer of warm air that normally surrounds the skin, accelerating the dispersion of body heat.
The result will be a perceived temperature significantly lower than the actual one. This wind cooling index represents not only a nuisance but also a health risk, as, in extreme conditions, it can promote the onset of hypothermia or frostbite, especially in case of prolonged exposure or inadequate clothing. The areas most exposed to these risks will be the mountain areas and the regions most affected by strong winds, such as the Adriatic coast and the Tyrrhenian areas, where Bora, Grecale, and Mistral gusts will blow respectively. The weather conditions will worsen further over the weekend, with a further drop in temperatures. The nights between Saturday, December 21, and Sunday, December 22, will be particularly harsh, aided by clear skies that will favor strong nocturnal radiation. In many areas of the Po Valley and the internal valleys of Central Italy, thermometers could drop several degrees below zero (32°F), making the atmosphere even colder. This scenario heralds a Christmas period characterized by intense cold over much of the national territory.
Italy is therefore preparing to face days of particularly harsh climate, where it will be essential to pay attention to clothing and limit prolonged exposure to low temperatures, especially in the presence of wind.
