Winter 2024-2025 promises to be a season full of interesting events and unexpected weather changes. December starts with a bang, with a notable Arctic blast, then becomes milder, paving the way for January, which could become the coldest month, while February, with its potential for frigid incursions, could surprise even more.
This Winter, set in the context of global climate changes, could show both the traits of the past and the new trends of contemporary climate.
January: the icy heart of the season
January is shaping up to be the coldest month of Winter 2024-2025.
With the progressive weakening of the High Pressure, cold Arctic currents could significantly lower temperatures across the entire Italian territory.
The northern regions will be the first to be hit.
In Lombardy and Piedmont, temperatures could drop to 23°F during the night, with widespread frost even during daytime in the more inland areas. Central Italy could witness low-altitude snowfalls along the Apennine ridge, while the South, under the influence of sirocco winds, could see mixed phenomena, with possible snow down to the coasts of Apulia and Sicily.
This cold phase will be favored by the presence of an Anticyclone pushing towards Northern Europe, allowing the influx of icy air masses over the Mediterranean.
February: a month ready to surprise
February 2025 will not be a transition month towards Spring, as many might think.
The possible formation of a connection between the Siberian Anticyclone and the polar flow could bring new waves of frost to Italy.
The central and northern regions will be particularly exposed, with episodes of intense snow that could occur even in the plains.
Temperatures could reach extreme values, with lows of 14°F in the Alpine and Apennine areas.
In the South, cities like Naples and Bari could witness unusual snowy events, creating spectacular winter scenes.
A stark contrast to a climate that no longer exists
Low-altitude snowfalls, which were once frequent, are rarer today, but the projections for January and February 2025 leave open the possibility of a memorable Winter.
It remains to be seen how atmospheric conditions will evolve and if we will witness a return of the cold weather that characterized the historic Winters of our country.
