February 2025: Dynamic weather and risk of extreme events

February 2025 is expected to be a month of great interest for meteorology enthusiasts and those monitoring seasonal climate trends in Italy.

According to the latest available data, the winter season has been influenced by a complex global climate framework, characterized by a possible transition between El Niño and La Niña.

This change could have significant effects on atmospheric conditions in Italy, with implications for precipitation, temperatures, and extreme phenomena.   One of the most relevant aspects for the month of February concerns the average temperatures.

After a relatively mild January in many regions, February could show greater thermal variability.

Cold currents from Northern Europe or Russia could make more frequent incursions, leading to a drop in temperatures especially in the North and the inland areas of the Center.

However, the central Mediterranean, with its natural tendency to influence the Italian climate, could mitigate the effects of the cold in some areas, especially along the Tyrrhenian and southern coasts.   On the precipitation front, seasonal models suggest that February could be a relatively dynamic month.

After a December and January characterized by periods of drought alternating with episodes of intense bad weather, an increase in the frequency of Atlantic disturbances is expected.

These systems could bring significant rains, particularly in the Center-North and along the Tyrrhenian slopes.

It is also possible that some of these disturbances combine with colder air, favoring abundant snowfalls in the Alps, the Apennines, and occasionally even at low altitudes in Northern Italy.

The southern regions and the major islands, on the other hand, could witness more intermittent and concentrated phenomena.   Another element to consider is the behavior of high pressures.

During February, the Azores anticyclone and the Russian-Siberian anticyclone will play a key role in determining the climatic trend.

If the Russian-Siberian anticyclone strengthens, it could push masses of cold air towards Southern Europe, increasing the risk of cold waves in Italy.

On the other hand, a prolonged dominance of the Azores anticyclone could lead to periods of atmospheric stability, with higher than average temperatures and scarce precipitation.   Regarding extreme phenomena, projections indicate a possible resurgence of intense events, such as strong thunderstorms or stormy winds, especially in conjunction with the passage of well-structured disturbances.

Particular attention might be necessary for coastal regions, where the risk of storm surges is higher, and for mountainous sectors, where intense snowfalls could increase the risk of avalanches.   it is essential to underline the role of global climate anomalies.

The influence of a possible La Niña could amplify thermal contrasts, increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events.

At the same time, climate change continues to influence atmospheric dynamics, with effects that also manifest on a local scale.

The combination of these factors makes February 2025 a month to monitor closely, both for the direct impact on daily activities and for the importance of better understanding the long-term evolution of the climate.   The month of February 2025 will likely be characterized by notable meteorological variability, alternating between cold and disturbed periods and milder and more stable phases.

The implications for the Italian territory will be manifold, and atmospheric conditions will have a direct impact on sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and water resource management.

Attention to updates and weather bulletins will be essential to best address the challenges posed by an ever-evolving climate.
