This phenomenon, known as a “cold drop” or “DANA“, is characterized by extremely low temperatures at high altitudes, with values reaching -28°C/-30°C at about 5500 meters altitude.
Italy will be the first to experience the effects of this disturbance, with a rapid passage of atmospheric instability and snowfall in the Alps expected between today and Wednesday, November 13. However, the main core of the cold air mass will quickly move westward, heading towards the Iberian Peninsula.
The configuration of this DANA shows significant similarities with previous episodes that have affected the region, both in terms of timing and geographical location.
The eastern areas of Spain will be particularly exposed to intense phenomena. The Valencian community, the Balearic Islands, and Catalonia are preparing to face heavy rainfall, with possible hail episodes.
Towards the end of the week, Andalusia could also be involved in this bad weather scenario.
AEMET is closely monitoring the evolution of this situation, aware of the potential associated risks. The interaction between the cold air mass at high altitudes and the warm sea creates favorable conditions for the development of extreme phenomena, increasing the amount of available water vapor and providing additional energy to storm structures.
Local authorities and residents in the most exposed areas are called to remain vigilant in the coming days. It is essential to follow weather forecast updates and take the necessary preventive measures to mitigate the possible impacts of this atmospheric event. the arrival of this “cold drop” in the western Mediterranean represents a significant meteorological phenomenon, with potential significant consequences for various regions, particularly for eastern Spain.
The combination of cold air at high altitudes and unusually warm seas creates conditions for potentially intense and dangerous meteorological events, requiring constant vigilance and adequate preparation from all involved parties.
