It should be clarified right away that this is not a definitive weather forecast; we are only exploring possible scenarios for the cold season. It is not our intention to predict with certainty how the weather will evolve in Winter.
The charm of Winter: a desire for many
For those who cannot stand the heat, the arrival of Winter is a relief.
After an intense and often suffocating Summer, many wonder if the next cold season will finally bring the much-desired cold and snow, or if it will be yet another disappointment.
There has been a noticeable decline in snowfall compared to a few decades ago, a phenomenon that seems destined to persist.
Global warming and the decline of snowfall
In many areas of the Po Valley, snowfalls have almost disappeared.
While it was once common to see snow accumulations of half a meter, today it is rare to reach even 10 cm.
This is not due to a reduction in overall precipitation; in fact, in many areas, rainfall has even increased.
However, due to global warming, rain has replaced snow at lower altitudes.
The phenomenon occurs because Winter temperatures are no longer low enough to ensure that rain turns into snow.
Less snow on the ground, yet more rain in Winter
In recent years, Winter precipitation accumulations have increased, especially in the subalpine and Po Valley areas.
However, the so-called “cold cushion” of the Po Valley, which once retained the cold necessary to turn rain into snow, is becoming less effective.
As a result, the scirocco and libeccio winds, which bring warm and humid air from the south, rarely result in snowfall on the ground.
Snow confined to the mountains
Today, significant snowfalls are almost exclusively limited to mountainous areas above 1000 meters.
And even in these areas, sometimes the snow cover is discontinuous up to 2000 meters, a phenomenon that would have been considered extraordinary in the past.
This change is a direct consequence of global warming and climate change.
If the next Winter 2025 brings an improvement in terms of snowfall, it will be due to particular causes and not statistical ones.
Winter 2025: what can we expect?
Regarding Winter 2025, there are many factors to consider, and uncertainty remains high.
Current trends suggest that we should prepare for a Winter with variable weather conditions, characterized by periods of stability due to High Pressure, alternating with brief episodes of bad weather.
We cannot completely rule out the occurrence of intense cold waves or significant snowfalls, especially in mountainous areas and regions exposed to cold currents from the northeast.
What will it all depend on?
The evolution of weather conditions in Winter will depend on a combination of atmospheric and climatic factors, many of which are difficult to predict well in advance.
It is essential to continue monitoring short and medium-term forecasts to get a clearer picture of the situation and prepare adequately for any scenario.
In the meantime, we can only hope for a Winter that can satisfy both snow lovers and those who prefer milder conditions.
