WEATHER UNTIL JANUARY 5, 2025, ANALYSIS AND FORECAST
A vast Anticyclone dominates the weather over much of Europe and has now also conquered all of Italy.
Atlantic disturbances are forced to pass at high latitudes, barely grazing the British Isles before moving towards Scandinavia.
The atmosphere is becoming increasingly stagnant over Italy. The temperature rise is particularly felt on the heights, while the cold persists in the lower layers. Thermal inversions, with cold air trapped in the plains and valleys, are typical of winter high pressures.
This phase of stability will last for a few more days, and no substantial changes are expected until New Year’s Eve.
The progressive accumulation of humidity in the lower layers will lead to a significant increase in fog in valleys and plains, especially in the Po Valley. The heart of the Anticyclone is expected to position itself right over Italy for New Year’s Eve, although increasing cloudy disturbances will not be lacking due to humid infiltrations conveyed by a weak Afro-Mediterranean depression. Some light rain cannot be ruled out between Liguria and the Tyrrhenian coastal regions, while the rest of Italy will continue to enjoy dry weather. These will be clear signs of the aging of the high pressure, followed by a real decline.
The change in circulation should lead us towards a deterioration that should be felt in the first weekend of 2025, with the probable influx of colder air of polar origin by Epiphany.
Winter will return as the absolute protagonist.
IN DETAIL
Monday 30: generally sunny weather will continue due to the further strengthening of the anticyclone.
More fog in the valleys and the Po Valley, especially during the coldest hours of the day.
Low clouds increasing on the Ligurian coasts, but without precipitation. New Year’s Eve: cloudy on the northern plains, the Tyrrhenian regions, and the islands, due to low clouds and also mist and fog in the Po Valley.
Stable and sunny elsewhere, as well as on hills and mountains. New Year’s Day: gloomy atmosphere in the Po Valley and western regions with some light drizzle. Further weather trends: more significant deterioration and temperature drop from the weekend, due to the arrival of a first North Atlantic front. The arrival of very cold air for Epiphany from the North cannot be ruled out.
