Although the Italian weather calendar marks a seasonal change, the actual atmospheric conditions will still be dominated by heat coming from North Africa. This ridge, although weakening compared to previous weeks, will continue to influence the weather, keeping temperatures high at least until the end of August and probably in the first days of September.
However, simulations from major computing centers are beginning to show signs of a possible evolution.
Signs of a turnaround in the long range
Weather forecasts for the first decade of September indicate a potential twist.
The North African ridge, already weakened by incursions of cool Atlantic currents at high altitudes, could definitively give way to much cooler air masses coming from Northern Europe. This change could mark a significant shift in the weather at the beginning of September.
The awakening of the Polar Vortex
The polar vortex shows signs of activation, especially in the stratosphere, where the air begins to cool rapidly, signaling the approach of typical late autumn dynamics at the North Pole.
This phenomenon could significantly influence weather conditions in the Mediterranean, introducing significant variations already in the first ten days of September.
Cold currents arriving from Northern Europe?
Despite the persistent heat, the arrival of cool currents from Northern Europe or the Atlantic could gradually eliminate the influence of African heat on Italy, bringing milder and more pleasant temperatures across the entire national territory.
Weather model analyses suggest a period between September 5 and 10 characterized by cooler and more unstable conditions, possibly marking the end of the heatwave that characterized the latter part of the summer. This does not exclude the possibility of further warm days ideal for spending time by the sea, but the intense and oppressive heat of recent weeks could now be behind us.
And on this point, we should be quite certain.
