In this context, weather conditions play a central role in conversations, often sparking debates about the persistence of good weather. The term “hot” perfectly describes the typical situation of this month, thanks to the dominance of High Pressure that stabilizes the atmosphere.
This meteorological phenomenon, in recent years, has shown remarkable resilience, avoiding the classic post-Ferragosto interruptions characterized by sudden thunderstorms.
The Return of the Tropical Anticyclone
After a less clement Ferragosto 2024, the weather quickly took control again, with the return of the Anticyclone, particularly the one of North African origin.
This meant an immediate rise in temperatures, often well above seasonal averages. Thermal projections indicate values exceeding 35°C in many Italian cities, with peaks occasionally reaching 38-40°C. This situation reinforces the association between August and extreme heat, a link that has consolidated over time, despite in the past it was the Azores High Pressure that guaranteed sunny weather.
Curiously, even though July sometimes presented itself as hotter, August has always been perceived as the hottest month. The reason for this perception could lie in the anticipation of vacations or the peak of Summer, but regardless of the motivations, August is historically the month of the most intense heatwaves.
Does it make sense to talk about “extreme” now?
Global warming has profoundly changed the climatic framework of the Mediterranean, extending the concept of “extreme heat” to the entire summer season. In fact, July has often proven to be more oppressive than August in terms of heatwaves.
However, in the collective perception, August remains the emblematic month of African heat, a reputation that persists regardless of meteorological reality. Analyzing past years, a consistency in this phenomenon is observed, which continues to characterize the summers of our continent.
The current situation, with its challenges and peculiarities, requires increasing attention to the dynamics of the weather, an element now inseparable from our daily lives and our life choices during the summer months.
